I mean, I guess I do: Sure, the first few months of offerings from the former CBS All Access were pretty anemic, but amid the pandemic, they announced plans to release their films simultaneously on streaming and in theaters, and surely that would be followed by a raft of interesting original TV series, yes? Eh, not so much. I mean, there’s Star Trek , of course—Paramount+ is still the place to go for that franchise, and this past year saw the launch of the fourth season of Discovery, plus the animated series Star Trek: Prodigy (new episodes of which arrive Jan. 6). And there was that show starring Hawkeye —the one not on Disney+. But other than that, well. Hmm. I mean, not to be a jerk! It’s hard to compete with Netflix and Disney and HBO. But when your service costs basically the same every month, you gotta give people something. And Paramount+ is…not so much doing that. Certainly not in January 2022. The most exciting new arrival this month is The Envoys (Los Enviados) , the streamer’s first Spanish-language original. Filmed in Mexico City, the series follows a pair of priests tasked by the Vatican with authenticating reports of miracles. It launches Jan. 20.
