If you’re HBO Max, it seems, you leave them out of the reunion special for the films based on their work and hope no one notices. That seems to be the case from the trailer for Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, which drops on the streaming service on Jan. 1. The promotional clip features the three now-grown cast members of the eight-film fantasy epic reminiscing about growing up at Hogwarts—and nary a mention of J.K. Rowling, the author who created the world the special is ostensibly celebrating. The author has done herself no favors in the PR department over the past few years, leaning into divisive anti-trans rights rhetoric, primarily via her presence on Twitter. It’s an odd flex, when she could’ve just said nothing and remained one of the most revered writers who ever lived. Instead, she didn’t even make the trailer for her own TV special. In less inflammatory news, HBO Max is welcoming a ton of other intriguing content in January. In addition to new seasons of returning favorites like Euphoria (Jan. 9) and The Righteous Gemstones (Jan. 9), we’ll see the premiere of Peacemaker (Jan. 13), a dark superhero spinoff from 2021’s The Suicide Squad starring John Cena as the titular murder-happy antihero; the film’s director, James Gunn, is onboard as creator.
